WAYS INTO MOVEMENT: OPEN WORKSHOP
Ways into Movement Open Workshops offer a variety of approaches to help participants get into motion and express themselves through movement.
Just like learning a musical instrument, we need different techniques and skills to find our own “melody” and communicate effectively with others. This process involves not only taking care of our “instrument” (our body) but also developing the ability to improvise, whether in solo performances, duets, or group dynamics.
To cultivate a broad movement vocabulary and a deeper understanding of our bodies, we explore the following four core perspectives:
Warm-up/Cleaning:
Is there a warm-up routine that can prepare us for what’s to come, even if we don’t know exactly what that will be? The goal of this section is to go through structured or freeform warm-ups that cleanse and ready the body for further movement. These routines aim to equip us with the necessary qualities and create a starting point from which we can expand in all directions.
Movement Exploration/Improvisation:
Here, we focus on exploring movement and the body from various angles and perspectives. Through somatic practices, we discover new ways of moving and enhance our movement quality, leading naturally into improvisation. This exploration broadens our understanding of the body’s possibilities.
Partnering/Touch:
In this section, we delve into what it means to move in relation to another person. We explore different ways of making contact, both with and without physical touch, discovering the space between bodies and the endless movement possibilities it holds. By exploring these connections, we learn to accept limitations and uncover the freedom within them.
Conditioning/Skill Development:
We often encounter situations where we want to perform a particular movement but lack the strength or ability. In this part of the workshop, we focus on building a solid base of physical skills—strength, rhythm, coordination—so that we can express ourselves freely through movement. The emphasis is on improving these abilities in a playful, non-linear way, without compromising the quality of the movement itself.
